Aboard the Invincible: Head of State Meeting

[Come one, come all. It's time for what Regent Cid expects to be the final council meeting before Garland is defeated. A good thing the airship is so enormous, because there are a lot of people here, all picked up the day before.

He stands up at the head of the table to greet everyone. There isn't sitting room for everyone, but the room is big enough for his audience. The meeting has now begun...]

[Rydia brightens, quickening her pace.]

There you are! I've been looking all over for you!

[Mindful of the baby bump, she still moves to give her friend a hug.]

[Garnet looks up, and smiles. The hug is most welcome, if not incredibly awkward. ]. I'm glad you came. It's been too long, and I hope we'll be able to make some real progress.

We better. It's time to act, and as soon as possible. There's no reason to wait, that I can see.

[She nods, resting a hand unconsciously on her belly]. I have to admit, I'm anxious to know what they managed to learn from Matoya. I also saw a chalice, like the one the Selkies had, and purchased it from the auction. I have a feeling it may be of some importance.

[Rydia nods.]

From what the Warrior of Light said...it will be.

[She sighs.]

Matoya...well, she's weird, but she hasn't really steered us wrong. If she's right about what will happen, us Sky People can't risk returning home. But...I've made my peace with that. It's better to stay here, than risk harming the world I helped save.

[Garnet looks sad, for Rydia's sake]. I'm so sorry you've been faced with such a situation. [Maybe it's selfish... But part of her is glad that they won't have to say goodbye.]

Me, too, but...I'll just have to trust the survivors of Mist to carry on. It's their legacy, too.

[She manages a small smile.]

At least I have a summoner family here. That does make up for a lot.

[She smiles a little at that, and takes Rydias hand, squeezing gently] We love you, Rydia. And I know there are many people here that are important to you as well. I only hope that, all the other worlds have pulled together as well as we have.

I'd like to think so. I can't speak for them all, but mine had to overcome past issues and band together before. I would think it possible for that to happen again.

From what I've heard, it seems all of them are the same. It's a bit unsettling, but also comforting, to know we all really have so much in common.

That's it, exactly. Well, if we finish what we've started...then hopefully that means the other worlds will be fine, too. I can live with not going back if I know the balance will be restored.

[She nods]. I don't want to live in fear anymore, that at any moment myself, or someone I care about, might vanish and never return. ...[she looks down]. But, there are some I haven't seen since this all started. I kept hoping they would return someday...

I want it all to stop. I can't stand the thought of even more people, being pulled from their families and friends. But... I'd be lying, if I said that I didn't still hope that some of my own lost friends, were returned to Gaia. ...Most of Tanatlus -- Zidane's family -- are missing, and have been for quite some time. And there are some of our old friends, from the last time we faced Garland. Freya, Amarant, Quina... [She shakes her head] I know those names don't mean anything to you.

I just... I want things to end, but I feel so selfish for wanting more than that.

I'm not going to blame you for that. While I'm glad to have as many friends as I do now, and familiar faces from home, there are a few I miss and wish were with us.

I guess it's normal. Always wanting more. I should be grateful for what I do have. What we all have, despite everything that's happened.

[she winces, moving her hand over her stomach] and I'm beginning to think this little one takes after Zidane. Every time I start to feel down, she kicks me. As if I need the reminder to focus on the good things. ...do you think children can be that smart?

I don't see why not. It wouldn't surprise me if she could sense your mood in there.

Do you have any names picked out yet?

Not exactly. We discussed a few, but no decisions yet. I think we decided on Jasper for a boy, but for a girl... [she just trails off. ]

That's harder. I imagine you don't want Garnet the 18th just yet.

[She makes a little face] definitely not. I don't think Zidane would ever go for that, anyway. Not that I would, either. I want my children to have their own names.

No, not really. I saw a couple on the Eidolon wall. But the only one I liked was Jayne. Zidane said it sounded boring, though.

Maybe as a middle name, then? Though that still leaves the first name to figure out....

Well, there's still time. And who knows, maybe you two will have the proper inspiration once you see her.

I don't even really know it's a girl... Zidane just started saying "she", and I'll admit, it sounds better than "it".

True enough, it does...and either way, the child will have wonderful parents. I'm sure of that.
