Are love letters the usual way in which affection is expressed? [ Percy looks a bit confused, and hesitant about asking people. No one really teaches these sort of things in the middle of a war, so he's curious in general, but he actually wants to know this for a reason, too. A specific one. That fake love letter made him start thinking, but it's not like he could ask Porom about it. Instead, he's asking others, and probably catching the attention of all the shipper~~din~~s and trolls in the process.]

Perhaps if those letters were genuine, but they were not the true emotions of those who were supposed to have sent them, and therefore could mean little to the ones who received them.

If it is not the person's honest feelings, then you make a liar of the person the letter is from, and attempt to deceive the one who receives it.
