I don't know that much, really - I got pulled in pretty much at the end of all that. Yevon was the religion, Sin was this giant monster aeon that swam around destroying things to punish people for using machina. Summoners were supposed to go on Pilgrimage to get the Final Aeon to fight it and defeat it, but Sin always came back.
