[ Packing what few belongings he has into a backpack, Denzel creeps out of his room and down the stairs, trying not to wake anybody up.
He doesn't want to leave, especially not now when his family need him, they need to stick together and support each other, but he just can't stay. He simply can't. The longer he stays, the more chance there is of something bad happening to Tifa and he can't let that happen.
At eight years old, after losing five out of six parental figures, Denzel is convinced that he must be a curse. First his parents - murdered by the dropping of the Sector 7 plate, and then Ruvie, killed by the Lifestream and the Geostigma while trying to protect him - because of a hole in the window that he caused, and then Gaskin, another victim of the Geostigma and now... Cloud.
Surely it was only a matter of time before something happens to Tifa, and that is why he is opening the front door as quietly as he can, only to have the family dog bound over to him excitedly. ]
No, boy. You stay. Good boy. Stay here.
[ He hopes no one heard him whispering at the dog, as he slips outside, shutting the door behind him softly. ]
