[Then there's a moment of silent glaring. He's inwardly very confused by this, but he's going to hide that fact by being more annoyed than usual.]

Whoever wrote that letter to Reis had better give an explanation for it.

[Well, that's... awkward. And here Cecil had been convinced Kain and Reis were so interested in each other, but if there's someone else... He suddenly looks very guilty.]

[And yet, Cecil is on to something.]

...It's... not so simple as that. They're destined to forever be apart, him in their world, and her here. There's nothing to be done but bear the burden of this.

[Because pining away forever over someone you love and cannot be with is perfectly ok to Kain.]

That's not true. Getting the chance to go home is what we've all been working for -- isn't it?

[Even with much of his family and friends on Gaia, the idea of staying here forever is still unthinkable to Cecil.]

[Kain pauses and thinks a moment, realizing that Cecil probably isn't aware of this.] I was told that a day will one day arrive when we'll have a choice... to return home, and risk destroying the fabric of the worlds, or to remain here and save them. When the time comes for this choice, it will be permanent. There'll be no more leaving Gaia or returning to it.

[And you only thought to mention this just now, Kain? :| Cecil just... stares as he takes in the implications of that. If he goes home, he'll harm the worlds. If he doesn't, he'll never be able to return to help his people or undo the damage he caused.

But if going back would only damage their world further... It's a lose-lose situation either way, and he doesn't like it in the slightest.]

How long have you known all that, Kain? Who told you?

[Telling people things is not Kain's strong suit. But withholding information, on the other hand...]

Matoya. Her words have never been wrong before. I didn't find out until earlier in this year, although...

I apologize for not mentioning this sooner. I had discussed it a while back, shortly after we went there, but had no opportunity to bring it up since.

No... Don't apologise. Many things have happened recently. It would be easy for it to slip your mind.

[Still, Kain's words have given him a lot to think on. He lapses into pensive silence.]

[The words come instantly, firmly, resolutely. Despite the things that he'll miss- and there are a lot- he's made up his mind a long time ago.]

I would have decided to remain even without the threat to the worlds. Zephyr is here. We need one another. My father is alive here. And Reis... [Trails off, not entirely sure what he should allow himself to think about her. He's afraid of something 'wrong' creeping into his head.] I'll not leave any of them. Even if this means giving up Mount Ordeals, and living with my darkness... I feel it's time I found my own path, anyway.

[Yeah, sorry Cecil. He's messing up your timeline and is rather happy in a Kain-way about it.]

I understand.

[And yet Cecil looks, for the briefest moment, disappointed. He had hoped everyone would be able to return home, together. His family, but Kain too, given how long he's been absent from the lives of his two best friends. Now it doesn't seem as though he'll be able to return home at all. But if Kain is happier here than at home, it would be selfish of him to wish for him to be anywhere else.]

I'm glad you respect my choice... as I will respect yours. Either way.

[He knows that Cecil has Baron. He's needed there, more than Kain thinks he'll ever be. But he looks vaguely saddened as well. He doesn't want to be separated from his childhood BFF forever, despite all the issues they've had between them.]

I still need more time to think on it, before I reach a decision.

[A lot more time. And he's wondering how he could possibly break the news about it to Rosa, if she doesn't know already.]

Of course. I know you'll do what's right, Cecil. Ultimately... you always do.
