[The voice on the network sounds very much like a moogle, not a person. There's some strange sounds, similar to what you'd expect to hear from a forest.]

We've got someone down, kupo! Looks like a Sky Person. She landed in the spring.

[A soft, tired, female voice breaks in behind the moogle's message.] Laguna? Please?

I can try and give you the short version? This place you're in now, this world, is called Gaia. And people get pulled in from all kinds of worlds! But they don't all get pulled from the same time. Your son isn't a baby any more. He's grown up.

And I'm his girlfriend. I'm Rinoa, it's nice to meet you.

[Silence on her end.

That's it. She's dreaming. This is a crazy dream and she's going to wake up in Winhill any minute now.]

Um, Raine?

I'm here.

[Still reeling. It's all crazy. And where is Laguna already?!]

Don't you believe me? I know it sounds crazy, but I'm telling the truth, I swear.

Very crazy.

[On that point they agree. Raine sounds entirely stunned, and not all that well either.]

I have to be dreaming.

You're not. This is too big for a dream, you'll see. You liked flowers, didn't you? White blooms. And you ran a bar in Winhill, all by yourself. Oh, and you adopted Ellone! She's here too.

See, people here know you, Raine. Even though I never got the chance to meet you...

[It all sounds right. Except for the odd use of the past tense, but Raine's used to Laguna getting it wrong too and it seems rude to correct someone she barely knows.]

I'm sorry, I don't mean to be rude. It's just... quite a lot to take in.

It's no problem, I understand. We all went through the same thing when we first got here. I ended up in a frozen cave full of monsters!

What?! That's awful!

I know! [She never tires of telling this story.] I was all on my own with no idea where I was, no GFs, no healing magic, and freezing to death! But it turned out okay, since Squall rescued me.

You haven't mentioned monsters, so I guess your place isn't that bad. Where are you?

[She's talking to a dream, but oh why not. By now she's talked to a son who doesn't know who she is, an adult who claims to be Ellone, and other people who have this batty notion that Laguna's a president.]

These... moogles... tell me it's Evil Forest, but I haven't figured out if it's the name or a description. I'm sitting next to the wet stump they pulled me out of.

I don't like the sound of that! Are you sure you're safe there?

[There's a pause as she fiddles with her phone.]

Evil Forest... It's right next to Alexandria. Hey, did Laguna say he was gonna collect you? Or Squall? He could fly off right now...

[The name of the forest feels pretty inconsequential compared to starting out the day in labor and waking up in a tree stump with her newborn nowhere to be found.]

Squall... [She's testing out that name, since everyone says that's her son's name, but she hadn't picked a name yet. That and the young man who was using it earlier certainly sounded a touch too surly for her tastes.] ...doesn't know who I am.

Laguna said he's coming.

[But it's Laguna and he's not known for either his timeliness or his adeptness in managing a map.]

Laguna... Yeah, Laguna can take care of you. I think you'll have to give Squall some time. It's just as weird for him as it is for you.

[She doesn't get it, but at the same time, that explanation makes sense. Only not. If she's his mother, and she's not convinced, then he should know who she is.]

I hope it's soon. I've missed him so much...
