[Eiko's a little nervous about getting in trouble for vanishing... again, and it shows in her voice.]

Huh? Yeah, he's the guy who made Iifa, so it could filter souls away from Gaia.

If the tree filters souls, then why is it bringing people back?

I never figured Garland the type to bring back the dead. Last I remember, he wasn't a nice guy.

I don't know. It didn't do that before.

There was this place I went to in the time I was missing from Gaia. It's just a Void... but Garland was there. He fought in a war on the side of Chaos... and I fought for the Goddess Cosmos.

A lot of people who are in Gaia, from other worlds, were there too but the only person who seems to remember even anything besides me is Tidus... And that's not much to go on.

What do you know about Garland, Eiko?

[Here goes nothing. Deep breath then a long explantion.]

Garland lived on Terra and he made the Iifa Tree to take away Gaia's souls so Terra could take over Gaia. He made the Genomes to put Terra's souls into, but when Kuja went crazy and destroyed that world, we brought all the Genomes here. Kuja kicked Garland off a cliff, but Zidane was talking to him in Memoria. He was thousands of years old and was the guy who blew up Alexandria and Madain Sari...

[There's a soft sigh. Memoria hasn't been kind to her this time around.]

Kuja? He's involved in this, too?

[A long sigh.]

If Garland did all that... why did Kuja go crazy? Because he was just a puppet to hold someone elses soul? Sounds familiar... Zidane's a Genome too, right? That's why they both look like they do, hm?

[Noticed how he's never spoken to either of them in Gaia, Eiko?]

Are you okay?

Huh? How'd you know that?

[Oh yeah, she's noticed and now confused. She's also ignoring that last question because she's really not okay. She doesn't want to cry again either.]

Yeah, Kuja was involved... Garland gave him and Zidane and Mikoto souls. Kuja and Zidane were supposed to kill everyone on Gaia. But when Kuja found out he was gonna die, he went nuts and destroyed Terra and tried to destroy the Crystal.

The... crystal? What crystal?

[He's ignoring her question, too, since explaining that always makes him sound insane. He doesn't need Eiko to think the same.]

The Crystal.

[Locked now. She's a smart kid sometimes.]

The Crystal's the source of... everything. Life, memories, the world. All the worlds. If you walk deep enough into Memoria, you'll find it.

There's a Crystal in Memoria?

[He pauses for a moment. Okay, maybe it's time he did explain himself.]

Eiko, there was about a month where I was missing from Gaia. Tifa told me I just vanished one day, then I came back. In that time, I went to a place we just called the Void.

Garland and Kuja are both alive there... I don't know if Kuja died here... but I know Garland did. He wasn't dead in the Void. I'm not sure but think it's him that's causing everything weird on Gaia.

Whoa...

[Bad news, processing. She's been suspicious since she ended up in this sucky place.]

That's not fair! We beat them! I gotta tell the others!!

I know how you feel. My enemy keeps coming back too. I've killed him... what feels like nine times now.

[He sighs.]

I'll tell Queen Garnet, okay? I'm with her anyway. I'll see if I can talk to Zidane too. There's a lot I need to tell him...

Maybe? I'll talk to the Queen. We'll see about getting to the Crystal.

[A long pause.]

I'll try to keep it safe, Eiko. I'm not going to let Garland or Kuja... or anybody hurt Gaia for you. It's not my home, but it's yours.

[And, oh holy hell, Eiko, you've just given Cloud a reason to keep fighting!]

... it's more than Gaia though. If the Crystal was destroyed, everything would be destroyed. Your world too, and Spira, and Ivalice.

Kuja didn't seem the most... sane of people when I last saw him. Then again, no one on Chaos's side did.
